Why Do We Get Acne?
Everybody is affected by acne at some point in their life. If you currently have acne, you are not alone.
Approximately 60 million people are affected by it.
What exactly are the causes of acne that so many people suffer from it?
Here we'll talk about the most common causes of acne.
Number#1: Hormones
Sex hormones is the number one cause of acne. These hormones begin at puberty and are called androgens.
This explains why majority of adolescents and teens suffer from acne. Hormones are also responsible for acne
flare-ups during menstruation and pregnancy.
The sebaceous gland produces extra oil(sebum) When stimulated by androgens. In travels thru the hair follicle towards the
surface of the skin. During it's journey, the sebum mixes with dead skin cells. This mixture of sebum and dead skin cells
clog the pores and as a result acne develops.
Number#2: Stress
Stress also causes the production of a hormone called cortisol. Stress also changes the hormone levels. Hormone
changes prompt the glands to produce more oil.As a result a whitehead, a blackhead or a pimple is born.
Number#3: Heavy make up
Heavy make-up clogs the pores and adds more oil to the skin. Cosmetics especially certain foundation, moisturizers,
and pomades (watch out for petrolatum. lanolin, butyl stearate, vegetable oils and oleic acid) can make acne worse.
Number#4: Certain medications
Vitamins are generally good for the body. But an excess of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 can cause acne flare-ups. These
vitamins are good for the skin but overuse should be avoided.
Number#5: Picking or squeezing
This will actually send the infection deeper into the skin and can cause scarring.
Number#6: Environmental irritants
High humidity actually causes swelling of skin. Pollution is of course a very big No No to good health, not just skin.
Number#7: Heredity
Acne is also inherited. Severe cases known as cystic acne usually come from heredity.
